Immigration

While we must preserve our openness as a land of diverse cultures, we must also stop the influx of illegal immigration and protect our borders. Our laws must be respected and obeyed not just by our citizens, but also by the millions of individuals wishing to become American citizens.

I am a strong supporter of the Border Protection, Antiterrorism, and Illegal Immigration Control Act.(H.R. 4437) This legislation is an important first step toward enforcing immigration laws and regaining control of our borders, improving national security. This legislation calls for unprecedented funding for increased man power, new survellience technology, and the construction of a border fence. H.R. 4437 also increases penalties for alien smuggling and willful employment of illegal aliens. The bill also ends the “catch and release” policy requiring all illegal aliens apprehended at the border to be detained until deportation, and, unlike other proposals, does not contain any form of amnesty for illegal aliens.

Other bills that I have cosponsored to help curb illegal immigration include H.R. 1986, authorizing the United States Military to assist in certain circumstances with border protection functions; and H.R. 3137, providing enhanced resources for federal, state, and local assistance in enforcement of the immigration laws.

Other legislation supported:

- Cosponsored H.R. 481, the REAL ID Act of 2005, critical legislation to regulate state driver’s license and identification document security standards.
- Supported legislation to provide compassionate solutions for immigrants in difficult situations, including humanitarian relief to law-abiding legal aliens and their families in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. (HR 3827)
