Lewis to Discuss Border Security in Tuesday News Conference

Owensboro, KY - Congressman Ron Lewis (R-KY) will hold a brief news conference tomorrow, Tuesday, August 15th, 1pmCT at the VFW Plaza, Owensboro.

Lewis will discuss his support of the Border Protection, Antiterrorism, and Illegal Immigration Control Act (H.R. 4437), legislation providing unprecedented funding for increases in manpower and new surveillance technology along the southern border. The House-passed bill incorporates the most comprehensive border security provisions ever passed in Congress.

The bill also authorizes the construction of a border fence, increased penalties for alien smuggling and willful employment of illegal aliens and mandates an end to the “catch and release” policy, requiring all illegal aliens apprehended at U.S. borders to remain in custody until deported. Unlike other proposals that reward illegal activity, H.R. 4437 does not offer any form of amnesty for illegal aliens.

“Our ability to move this legislation past liberal obstructionists in Congress would mark an important step forward in our effort to regain control of our borders and improve national security,” said Lewis.

“Border security is a critical component of national security in the age of terrorism. Their voting record speaks for itself: Democrats in the House have no plan for securing the borders and stopping illegal immigration while their colleagues in the Senate continue to advocate perilous policies to preserve open borders and reward illegal activity. Despite reflexive partisan objection, House Republicans remain committed to enacting a strong bill that will strengthen national borders and enforce immigration laws. The American people deserve nothing less.”
